#BeingHungrySucks: Going hungry so they don't have to
The Rick Hansen Foundation has always been about giving back, helping those in need and educating the community on issues that affect us all. That’s why; we’re raising awareness this holiday season to bring to light an issue that faces many of our community members in Vancouver’s Downtown East Side (DTES).
Where It's Happening
Support Marco Pasqua, Planat’s Marketing and Community Manager, on December 19th, along with other special guests, as they “lock in” to lead the way in the fight against hunger. From 6pm – 6am, participants will call the Save On Meats Diner (43 West Hastings) their new temporary home. Some participants will join remotely for a full night of speakers and workshops that will help tackle difficult issues as a community.
Other guests in attendance will be: Olympic champion Ashleigh McIvor, President of Earls Kitchen + Bar Mo Jessa, Global BC Morning News co-host Sophie Lui and many more.
The event is being put on by A Better Life Foundation, which was founded in 2012 in response to a growing concern regarding food security in the downtown eastside of Vancouver. Partial proceeds will go towards supporting the Rainier Women's Hotel and the Strathcona Elementary breakfast program, which provides meals to feed nearly 200 kids every school day.
During the event, Marco will be talking about accessibility issues in the DTES and how we can remove physical and social barriers in the community.
Inclusion is something Save On Meats owner Mark Brand is passionate about. A leader in the business community who is committed to giving back, he introduced a program to ensure that 30 percent of Save On Meats employees face some sort of barrier to employment.
