I had an amazing team. They challenged, encouraged and supported me and asked nothing in return. I feel incredibly privileged to have had them with me. Without them, the dream would have been absolutely impossible. - Rick Hansen
When Rick was building his team for the Man In Motion World Tour (MIMWT), he chose individuals he knew would make the grade. They didn’t always see the potential within themselves… but Rick did. He also knew that the team wouldn’t succeed if his belief in them was the only “glue” holding them together. They would also need to trust in his leadership and share the dream. He obviously chose well.
As the Tour began to take shape, Rick realized there would have to be more than one “team”. The closest and longest-serving teams were known as the Road Crew and the Home Team: those who would travel with him around the world, and those who worked at the headquarters in Vancouver. In time, the overall team would expand further to include volunteers and supporters across Canada and around the world.
When the team said goodbye to the crowd gathered at Oakridge Shopping Centre on March 21, 1985, they had no idea of the adventures and challenges that lay ahead.
