With vision, tenacity and strength of character, Rick Hansen and the Rick Hansen Foundation have been catalysts for change – transcending political boundaries to form unexpected alliances and mobilize resources across Canada and around the globe to make our world more accessible to all.
On Tuesday, November 18, 2008 something magical happened in Vancouver. The Blusson Spinal Cord Centre opened marking the realization of Rick Hansen’s dream to have a centre solely dedicated to advancing world-leading, integrated research and care for people with spinal cord injury.
Following his Man In Motion World Tour, Rick’s vision was to create a community dedicated to one single purpose - helping people with spinal cord injury (SCI). The greatest challenge was an incredibly fragmented community of well-intentioned and successful researchers, clinicians, rehabilitation practitioners and non-profit organization staff and volunteers. They were all working to the best of their ability but in many cases, in isolation of one another. While the dream of hope and possibilities existed, it did so within a low level of collaboration and communication.
